Fly into Istanbul (IST) and out of İzmir (ADB). This is an open-jaw ticket and it usually prices within a few per cent of a return — ask us to quote flights alongside the tour if that is easier.
Confirmation
Book at least 14 days before departure. Cappadocia cave hotels and the internal flight are the two things that sell out first. We confirm within 24 hours of your deposit, and refund in full if we cannot secure your dates. Before we confirm we check your dates against anything the itinerary is built round — museums, markets and monuments keep weekly closing days, and we would rather move a day than spend one at a locked gate.
Day 6 is a long drive — Cappadocia to Pamukkale is around 600 km. We break it properly, and we can substitute a flight via Istanbul if you would rather not spend the day in a car.

Arrival in Istanbul AT LEISURE
Arrive at Istanbul Airport. Make your own way in — the transfer is not included — Sultanahmet is 45 km south and the run takes 60–90 minutes, traffic depending.
Check in and rest. Nothing today is time-critical.
Late afternoon on the Hippodrome — the Byzantine chariot course, now a long square with an Egyptian obelisk at one end and a serpent column from Delphi in the middle.
Dinner in Sultanahmet or down the hill in Kumkapı. Ignore anyone who approaches you in English offering a restaurant; that is a carpet shop with extra steps.
Your guide will confirm the next morning’s pickup at check-in. Day 2 starts at 08:30 to reach Hagia Sophia before the first coach groups.

The Imperial Quarter GUIDED
Hagia Sophia first thing. Cathedral in 537, mosque in 1453, museum in 1935, mosque again since 2020 — and the largest dome on earth for the best part of a millennium.
The Blue Mosque across the square: twenty thousand İznik tiles inside, and six minarets where four was the convention.
Both are working mosques. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off, headscarf for women — bring your own rather than queue for a loaner — and both close to visitors during the five daily prayers.
Topkapı Palace after lunch: four courtyards on the headland above the Golden Horn. The Harem is a separate ticket and the best part of the palace.
Finish underground at the Basilica Cistern — 336 columns holding up a sixth-century reservoir, two of them standing on Medusa heads turned sideways and upside down.

Bazaars & the Bosphorus AT LEISURE
The Grand Bazaar in the morning — four thousand shops under sixty streets, trading since 1461. Haggling is expected; start at about half.
Downhill to the Spice Bazaar by the water, which is smaller, denser and better for edible souvenirs.
Afternoon on the Bosphorus: the strait that separates Europe from Asia, lined with wooden yalı houses and Ottoman palaces, and only really legible from the water.
Cross to Galata for the 1348 tower and the coffee and design streets of Karaköy below it.
Get an İstanbulkart if you plan any independent moving about — one card covers ferries, trams and the funicular, and a public ferry across the strait costs almost nothing.

Into the Rock Valleys AT LEISURE
Morning flight to Nevşehir Kapadokya — 90 minutes, against roughly ten hours by road.
Straight to the Göreme Open Air Museum: a monastic valley of churches cut into the tufa in the 10th and 11th centuries, several still holding their frescoes.
Paşabağ and Devrent in the afternoon for the fairy chimneys — cones of soft rock left standing under harder basalt caps, some hollowed into hermit cells.
Check into a cave hotel. These are genuine rock-cut rooms; they are cool, quiet and dark, and the windows are small by definition.
If you want the balloon, book it now. Flights go at first light, they are capped by the civil aviation authority, and they are cancelled outright for wind — which is why we put two nights here rather than one.

Uçhisar & the Underground City GUIDED
Optional pre-dawn balloon flight over the valleys. Roughly an hour in the air, and the reason most people come here at all.
Uçhisar Castle — a single outcrop tunnelled through with rooms, and the highest point in Cappadocia. The whole region reads from the top.
South to Kaymaklı, a city cut eight levels into the rock with stables, chapels, wells and ventilation shafts. Four levels are open.
The underground city is not for everyone. Passages are low, narrow and occasionally steep. Tell us in advance if that is a problem and we will substitute the Ihlara valley walk.
Finish at Avanos on the Kızılırmak, where the potters still throw the same red river clay they have worked since the Hittites.

A long day on the road west — around 600 km. We break it at Konya or Sultanhanı depending on the route, and it is a genuinely interesting drive across the Anatolian plateau.
Arrive at Pamukkale in the late afternoon: a white hillside of calcite terraces built up by hot springs over millennia, filled with warm shallow water.
You walk the travertines barefoot. That is enforced, not advisory — shoes damage the calcite. The surface is ridged and slippery, so take it slowly.
Hierapolis sits on top: the Roman spa city, with a theatre in good repair and a necropolis of more than a thousand tombs.
Prefer to fly? Cappadocia to İzmir via Istanbul turns this into a half day. It adds roughly US$140 per person and we are happy to price it.

Ephesus & Şirince GUIDED
Ephesus from the upper gate, so the whole site runs downhill: marble streets, the terraced houses, the Library of Celsus and a theatre that held twenty-five thousand.
Start early. There is almost no shade on the site, and from June to September it is genuinely punishing by eleven.
The House of the Virgin Mary on the hill above — a small stone chapel held to be where Mary spent her last years, and a pilgrimage site for Christians and Muslims both.
Late afternoon in Şirince, a village of Greek stone houses left behind by the 1923 population exchange, now making fruit wine of variable seriousness.
The Terrace Houses are a separate ticket inside Ephesus and are the best-preserved Roman domestic interiors anywhere. Worth every lira.

A last hour in Kuşadası — the 14th-century caravanserai in the centre, the bazaar behind it, and the causeway out to Pigeon Island.
This is the best place on the trip for a Turkish bath if you have not had one. Two hours, and worth building into the morning.
Transfer to İzmir Adnan Menderes, about 90 minutes north. Allow 3 hours before an international departure.
Buying a carpet? Get the certificate and the shop’s export paperwork before you leave the shop, not after. We can recommend dealers who will not need chasing.

Seasonal pricing. The figures above are low and shoulder season. April to May and September to October are the best months to travel and the dearest, because the weather is near perfect. July and August cost more than winter too, but bring 35°C at Ephesus with no shade, which is why they are not the peak. Winter is cheapest, and Cappadocia under snow is spectacular — though balloon cancellations run much higher.
