Fly into Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ). There is no international service, so every route connects through an Australian city — commonly Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Darwin or Cairns. The airport is about 20 minutes from Yulara and we meet you in the terminal.
Confirmation
We confirm hotels and touring within 24 hours of your enquiry. Book at least 14 days before departure. A deposit holds it, and it is refunded in full if we cannot secure your dates. Before we confirm we check your dates against anything the itinerary is built round — museums, markets and monuments keep weekly closing days, and we would rather move a day than spend one at a locked gate.
This is a private, independent tour — no fixed group and no set departure date. Uluru has been closed to climbing since 26 October 2019, at the request of Aṁangu, its traditional owners; the base walk is what people do instead, and it is the better half of the trip. Some sites in the park are sacred and signposted as no-photography. Summer is severe — December to February regularly passes 40°C, and the Valley of the Winds is cut back to Karu Lookout from 11am whenever the forecast reaches 36°C. May to September is the season this trip is built for.

Arrive, and the rock at sunset TICKETS INCLUDED

  • Land at Ayers Rock Airport and make your way the 20 minutes to Yulara, the small resort town that is the only accommodation base near the park. Uluru itself has none.
  • Your park shuttle pass is included from today, so the afternoon is yours and you are not waiting on a tour. Most people sleep off the flight — the middle of the day here is the part to spend indoors.
  • Late afternoon, into the park and straight to the Cultural Centre. It is the right order: it explains what you are about to look at, in Aṁangu words, before you look at it.
  • Then the sunset viewing area for the twenty minutes the whole trip is built around. Bring more water than you think and something warm; the temperature falls fast once the sun goes.

Sunrise, the base of Uluru, and Kata Tjuṯa GUIDED

  • Picked up before dawn for Talinguru Nyakunytjaku — the one spot that holds Uluru and Kata Tjuṯa in the same frame as the sun comes up. Light breakfast and hot coffee while you watch.
  • Then the base, on foot with your guide: the Mala Walk along the north-west face past rock art and shelters, and the level path to Kapi Muṯitjulu, a permanent waterhole in a cleft of the rock. The full circuit is 10.6 km and flat, and doing it at first light is the best thing on this itinerary.
  • Back for the middle of the day, which is when nobody should be walking here.
  • Out again mid-afternoon to Kata Tjuṯa, 50 km west — thirty-six domes, several taller than Uluru, and a fraction of the visitors. The walk is Walpa Gorge, about an hour up a rock corridor between the two largest domes.
  • It is a long day and that is deliberate. On two nights this is the only way to see both places properly, and the alternative is dropping one of them.

A last look, and home AT LEISURE

  • Nothing is scheduled today, on purpose. After yesterday you will want the morning, and an early tour in front of an afternoon flight is how people miss flights.
  • The resort shuttle runs the town all morning if you want the lookout at the top of it, the art centre, or simply breakfast somewhere with a view of the dunes.
  • Out to Ayers Rock Airport for an afternoon flight. If your flight is late enough, tell us and we will look at adding the Valley of the Winds at Karu Lookout in the morning — it depends on the day and on the heat, so we will not promise it in advance.

Breakfast is in the price. Every other meal is yours to choose, so here is where we would eat. We do not arrange any of these and you would pay for them yourself. They are simply places we rate, near where the trip goes. Tick any you like and they appear on the map.

    Yulara is the only accommodation base near the park — Uluru itself has none, and the nearest alternative is Alice Springs, 450 km away. So all three tiers sit in one small town on the same free shuttle loop: what separates them is the room, the pool and how far you walk to dinner, not the location.

    Seasonal pricing. May to September is the season this trip is built for — days in the low twenties, and the walks all open. It is also when everyone else comes, so rooms are tightest and dearest from June to August and over the Australian school holidays. December to February is hot enough to close walks by late morning and is much cheaper for exactly that reason. March–April and October–November sit in between and are, for a three-day trip, arguably the best value of the year.
